New Painting – Juan de Fuca Trail

The Juan de Fuca Trail on the west coast of Vancouver Island, and was established in 1889 to maintain a telegraph line that connected Bamfield to Victoria. Moving through the forest on this trail, I felt like 1889 was not that long ago. Being a part of that landscape, I was aware of how immense it is, and how my existence is just a blip compared to the rocks, the trees, the ocean and its waves. Being there was both humbling as I contemplated my insignificance, and comforting to know it will be there long after I am not.

Prints of this painting and the original are available here.

New Painting – Clover Point

Clover Point is right at the Southern tip of Victoria. It’s a great place to watch storms; the waves get big there, and can make one feel small. This particular day, after dropping my youngest off at daycare, I drove here, clambered down to the water, and took in the Olympic Mountains across the way. The sun was working it’s way through the sky on the horizon, giving colour to clouds, mist, and fog. Seeing so far, and looking so close into the tidal pools, feeling my feet teeter on the solid rocks beneath them; these things ground me, and remind me of my place in the world.

New Painting – Sombrio Trail

I painted this from a series of photos I took at sunrise near Sombrio beach. It was peaceful, but the air was vibrant with the quiet sounds of the woods, and subtle movement was everywhere when I stopped to look for it. The light was voluminous; it felt like you could cut through it with a knife.

Prints of this painting will be available soon here.
