Islands from Bear Hill

There is an ambivalence for me when I see the ocean. I grew up on the prairies, where there is almost always a way to walk to any place you can see.

The ocean is full of life and possibility, and it is a gateway to the rest of the world, but it can also be seen as an impassable boundary that makes islands into worlds of their very own. That’s how I like to think of them when I see them from the summit of Bear Hill on the Saanich Peninsula.
