Underwood

While I never get bored of painting landscapes, I do like to try doing something new every time. I’ll try a new paint product, or will attempt to develop a new way of applying it to the canvas, or something like that.

This is the first time I can think of that I tried a whole new kind of subject. I’ve done 179 paintings before this one, and they’ve all been landscapes, with a floral or two in there. This, as you might have guessed, is a typewriter.

It’s a beautiful object, and an elegant machine. It belonged to my grandmother, who went to school to learn to be a secretary at a time when career options were very limited for women. I don’t think she ever wound up working in that field. When this found it’s way to my hands after both of my grandparents had passed, it was still in great shape.

You could type a letter on it today. Sometimes I still do, just to feel the whack of the letter against the platen, and to engage in a way of putting thoughts down in type in a word processing technique I feel that I can understand completely from my brain through my fingers and on to the printed page.
